What is a Baby Grand Piano?

By now you might be asking yourself “what is a baby grand piano?”. When we think of grand pianos, we think about majestic and powerful pianos that can fill a concert hall with beautiful notes. A baby grand piano is just that, but without occupying a ballroom-worth of storage space. It’s basically a smaller version of the grand piano but it offers the same superior sound quality and a touch of grace. The most noticeable difference between a full grand and a baby grand is the baby grand piano’s size.

The average size of a baby grand piano measures 5 feet in width and between 4’11 to 5’11 in length. The width of the piano is the same for the baby grand and full grand model, because both of them have the 88 keys of the standard piano keyboard.

Certain pianos with extra-wide keyboards, such as the Bosendorfer Imperial have a width closer to 5.9 feet to accommodate for the 97 keys it features, but the standard for concert grand pianos and baby grands is 5 feet and 88 keys.

How Much Does a Baby Grand Piano Weigh?

Your average baby grand piano will weigh in at about 600-700 pounds, with micro baby grands weighing an average 500-600 pounds. The weight of the instrument depends heavily on the type of wood used, the piano’s hardware and the use of acrylic. You can expect different brands of pianos to weigh differently, but it’s not usually substantial. Pianos with lots of acrylic finishes usually weigh a bit more.
